The Big Bash League is heading overseas for the first time in its history. Melbourne Renegades will face Perth Scorchers at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on 12 December to launch BBL|16. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi confirmed the fixture at the MCG on Friday.
BBL Chennai Opener Marks a Global First
No BBL match has ever been played outside Australia. The Renegades will be the designated home side for the clash, with both teams granted extra travel time before returning for their next domestic fixtures. Cricket Australia will release the full BBL|16 schedule next week.
The game also makes the BBL the first foreign T20 league to stage a match on Indian soil. That is a significant marker for a competition that has long tracked the IPL from a distance.
BBL Chennai Fixture Anchors the ‘G’day Namaste’ Push
The Chennai opener sits at the centre of a week-long ‘G’day Namaste’ Festival of Australian Sport, Culture and Business Engagement. It coincides with the launch of the India-Australia Sports Collaboration Roadmap, a joint initiative covering sports science, capability building, and hosting expertise.
Both nations have plenty on their sporting calendars. India will stage the 2030 Commonwealth Games. Australia will host the 2032 Olympics. India is also bidding for the 2036 Games, with Albanese signalling Australian support.
BBL Chennai Choice Reflects Strong Indian Fanbase
Cricket Australia’s Alistair Dobson said several BBL clubs were interested, but scheduling ruled some out. Chennai’s cricket-mad audience made the venue an obvious pick.
“The BBL is well-liked and respected. We can’t wait to see all the fans turn out, albeit I suspect there’ll be a fair chunk of yellow in the crowd,” Dobson said.
Chennai’s yellow army will likely dominate the stands regardless of who plays. That crowd energy alone could reshape how the BBL views international expansion.
BBL takes its boldest step yet with Chennai season-opener.
