The Big Bash League (BBL) is Australia’s premier Twenty20 cricket competition, run by Cricket Australia each summer between December and February.
Since launching in 2011, the tournament has grown into one of the most popular T20 leagues in the world, combining high-quality cricket with a family-friendly entertainment atmosphere.

The Eight BBL Teams
The competition features eight city-based franchise teams across Australia. Sydney and Melbourne each have two teams, while Adelaide, Brisbane, Hobart, and Perth have one each.

Regular Season
Each team plays 10 league matches during the regular season, split evenly between home and away fixtures. The format is not a full double round-robin, meaning teams do not face every opponent twice.
Points are awarded as follows:
- Win: 2 points
- Tie or No Result: 1 point
- Loss: 0 points
At the end of the league phase, the top four teams on the points table advance to the finals series.
The BBL Finals Series
The BBL uses a page-style knockout system that rewards the top two teams with a “double chance.” This means the highest-ranked qualifiers can afford to lose one match and still have a path to the final.

The Final is played at the home ground of the highest-ranked remaining team, giving the top-of-the-table side an additional advantage throughout the playoffs.
Key BBL Rules and Playing Conditions
The BBL operates under standard T20 rules with several competition-specific features:
- Powerplay (Overs 1 to 4): Only two fielders are allowed outside the inner circle during the first four overs of each innings.
- Power Surge: The batting team can activate a two-over floating powerplay at any point after the 10th over, restricting the fielding side to just two players outside the circle. This replaced the traditional six-over opening powerplay and gives teams a tactical weapon in the back half of the innings.
- Bat Flip: The BBL replaced the traditional coin toss with a bat flip during the 2018-19 season to decide which team bats or bowls first.
- Decision Review System (DRS): Fully operational across all BBL matches, allowing teams to challenge umpire decisions.
BBL Squad and Player Rules
Each BBL franchise must maintain a squad of at least 18 players, including a minimum of two players on rookie contracts. International players are selected through an annual overseas draft, with each team required to sign at least two overseas players.
From the 2023-24 season onwards, teams can also sign up to two marquee supplementary players from the Australian national squad. These players do not count against the regular 18-player squad limit. Teams are also permitted to pre-sign one international player before the draft.
BBL Champions
The Perth Scorchers are the most successful franchise in BBL history, having won six titles. They claimed their latest championship in BBL|15 (2025-26) after defeating the Sydney Sixers in the final.
