Nikhil Chaudhary has rewritten a small but significant piece of Australian cricket history. The all-rounder pulled on the baggy gold for his T20I debut against Bangladesh in Chattogram on Wednesday. He became the first India-born male cricketer to represent Australia in 62 years.

The Historic Milestone

The last India-born male to play for Australia was Gujarat-born leg-spinner Rex Sellars in the 1964 Test in Calcutta. Several Indian-origin players have worn Australian colours since, including Gurinder Sandhu and Tanveer Sangha.

Pune-born Lisa Sthalekar also captained the women’s team. But Chaudhary now stands alone among modern men’s debutants. He took his chance instantly. A diving catch to dismiss Soumya Sarkar in the series opener settled any nerves.

“After that first catch, I was even more confident that I can actually do something on the international stage,” Chaudhary said.

A Career Built by Accident and Hard Work

Chaudhary’s path to Australia began with a holiday. He flew to Queensland in March 2020 to visit his uncle. COVID-19 then shut the borders and stranded him for months.

He picked up club cricket with Norths in Brisbane once restrictions eased. That decision changed his life. Former Queensland coach James Hopes spotted him and recommended him to Big Bash franchises. Hobart Hurricanes signed him in 2023 after he completed the three-year local residency requirement.

Off the field, Chaudhary worked anywhere he could. He chopped vegetables in restaurants, drove taxis and delivered parcels. He trained before shifts and after them.

“I’ve probably seen worse times in my life away from cricket. So when you come into cricket which you actually love, you don’t get that much anxiety or pressure,” he said.

Learning From Zampa, Eyeing More

Chaudhary earned his call-up after Travis Head took leave to be with family. He now plans to lean heavily on Adam Zampa’s experience inside the squad. A long international journey may be just beginning.
