Th Women’s Big Bash League launched in 2015-16 and quickly set the global standard for women’s franchise T20, drawing the world’s best players and, in time, big standalone crowds. Eleven seasons in, the most striking thing about its honour roll is the absence of a dynasty.
Where the men’s BBL has been shaped by Perth’s dominance, the WBBL has spread its silverware widely. Seven of the eight franchises have lifted the trophy, four of them twice, and the title has changed hands almost every summer. This is every champion, runner-up and final result, with the story behind each.

How Every WBBL Season Unfolded
Each season has its own decider, hero or record. Here is what happened, year by year.
WBBL|01 (2015-16): Sydney Thunder
Sydney Thunder won the inaugural WBBL in a derby against the Sixers at the MCG, chasing 116 with three balls and three wickets to spare. Meg Lanning’s 560 runs for Melbourne Stars set the first batting benchmark and earned her Player of the Tournament.
WBBL|02 (2016-17): Sydney Sixers
The Sixers edged Perth Scorchers by seven runs at the WACA in a tight defence of 124. Sarah Aley was the difference, taking the Player of the Final award after a season of consistent wicket-taking, while Lanning again topped the run charts.
WBBL|03 (2017-18): Sydney Sixers
The Sixers went back-to-back, crushing Perth by nine wickets in Adelaide after bowling them out for just 99. Ellyse Perry’s 552 runs underlined her all-round dominance, and Sarah Coyte starred in the final.
WBBL|04 (2018-19): Brisbane Heat
Brisbane claimed a maiden title, chasing down the Sixers in the second-last over at Drummoyne. The season belonged to Perry, whose 778 runs remain the highest individual tally in a WBBL season. Beth Mooney was Player of the Final.
WBBL|05 (2019-20): Brisbane Heat
The Heat went back-to-back, running down Adelaide’s 161 comfortably behind Mooney’s second straight Player of the Final award. Sophie Devine’s 769 runs for the Strikers were the standout of the summer.
WBBL|06 (2020-21): Sydney Thunder
In a COVID-affected, Sydney-hubbed season, Thunder won their second title, bowling Melbourne Stars out for 86 and cruising home. Shabnim Ismail’s pace was decisive, and the Stars’ only final to date ended in defeat.
WBBL|07 (2021-22): Perth Scorchers
Perth won their first title in front of a record WBBL final crowd of 15,511 at Perth Stadium, defending 146 against Adelaide. Marizanne Kapp’s all-round effort sealed a breakthrough on home soil.
WBBL|08 (2022-23): Adelaide Strikers

The Strikers went back-to-back in a thriller, defending 125 to beat Brisbane Heat by just three runs at Adelaide Oval. Leg-spinner Amanda-Jade Wellington took the final honours.
WBBL|10 (2024-25): Melbourne Renegades
The Renegades won a maiden title at the MCG, with Hayley Matthews steering them past Brisbane Heat by seven runs on DLS. It capped a remarkable worst-to-first turnaround after finishing last the previous season.
