The Big Bash League began in 2011-12 as a rebranded summer experiment and has grown into Australia’s premier Twenty20 competition. Fifteen seasons on, it draws seven-figure aggregate crowds, the best overseas talent, and a finals night that now feels like part of the cricket calendar.
This is the full winners list, but it is also the story behind it: how each champion got there, the finals that became folklore, and the records that stood out along the way. Seven of the eight franchises have now lifted the trophy, yet one name towers over the rest.

How Every BBL Season Unfolded
Each season has its own defining final, hero or record. Here is what actually happened, year by year.
2011-12: Sydney Sixers
The Sixers won the first ever BBL final at the WACA, with Moises Henriques top-scoring and chipping in with the ball. His all-round display set the tone for the franchise’s clutch reputation and gave the new league an immediate marquee champion.
2012-13: Brisbane Heat
Brisbane claimed their first title, again beating Perth at the WACA. Ben Cutting’s quickfire 39 and two wickets swung the final. The standout season highlight came earlier when Lasith Malinga produced 6/7 against Perth, still the best bowling figures in BBL history.
2013-14: Perth Scorchers
Perth finally broke through for a maiden crown against Hobart at the WACA. Craig Simmons smashed 112 off 58 balls, which remains the highest individual score in any BBL final. Simmons had also blasted a record-breaking 39-ball hundred earlier in the tournament.
2014-15: Perth Scorchers
One of the great BBL finishes. Perth went back-to-back, edging Sydney Sixers off the final delivery at Manuka Oval. Brett Lee, in his last BBL match, nearly pulled off a heist with two late wickets, but the Scorchers got home by 6 wickets after Yasir Arafat’s 3/25 had set it up.
2015-16: Sydney Thunder
The league’s best fairytale. Thunder won their first title a season after finishing last, with Usman Khawaja’s 70 and Mike Hussey’s leadership downing Melbourne Stars at the MCG. Chris Gayle lit up the season with a 12-ball fifty, the fastest in BBL history.
2016-17: Perth Scorchers
Perth claimed a third title with a ruthless chase of 144 in just 15 overs against the Sixers, anchored by Michael Klinger’s 71. The season’s freak moment was Mitchell Johnson’s 4-2-3-3 in the semi-final, the most economical completed spell the BBL has seen.
2017-18: Adelaide Strikers
Adelaide won their only title, posting 2/202 and beating Hobart by 25 runs at Adelaide Oval behind Travis Head’s captain’s knock of 85 off 44. The season belonged to D’Arcy Short’s run-scoring, which ended in final heartbreak for the Hurricanes.
2018-19: Melbourne Renegades
A maiden title in the most dramatic style. Melbourne Stars looked home in the derby final before collapsing by 7 wickets for 19 runs at Marvel Stadium. Dan Christian’s all-round effort sealed it and handed the Renegades their breakthrough.
2019-20: Sydney Sixers
The first season of the five-game playoff format ended with a rain-shortened SCG final, the Sixers beating Melbourne Stars by 19 runs under DLS. Josh Philippe’s brisk 52 gave them control in tricky conditions.
2020-21: Sydney Sixers
The Sixers went back-to-back, again over Perth at the SCG, with James Vince producing a final masterclass in his unbeaten 95. This was the season the Power Surge, X-Factor substitute and Bash Boost point rules arrived.
2021-22: Perth Scorchers
Perth returned to the summit with a comprehensive win over Sydney Sixers at Marvel Stadium. Englishman Laurie Evans was the difference, his unbeaten 76 off 41 powering the Scorchers to a fourth crown.
2022-23: Perth Scorchers
Back-to-back again. Perth chased 176 against Brisbane Heat with four balls to spare at Optus Stadium, captain Ashton Turner leading the charge with 54. The international draft debuted this season, and Sydney Thunder were bowled out for 15, the lowest total in BBL history.
2023-24: Brisbane Heat
Brisbane ended an 11-year wait for a second title, routing Sydney Sixers by 54 runs at the Gabba, the biggest winning margin in a BBL final. Spencer Johnson’s 4/26 tore through the Sixers’ top order.
2024-25: Hobart Hurricanes
After years of near-misses, Hobart finally won a maiden title, chasing 183 against Sydney Thunder in just 14.1 overs at home. Mitchell Owen’s 42-ball 108 equalled the fastest BBL century and produced the highest successful run-chase in any final.
2025-26: Perth Scorchers
Perth claimed a record sixth title, beating Sydney Sixers by 6 wickets at Optus Stadium. Jhye Richardson and David Payne took three wickets apiece to bowl the Sixers out for 132 before Mitchell Marsh and Finn Allen set up the chase. Ashton Turner became the first player to win five BBL finals.

What the BBL Winners List Tells Us
Across fifteen seasons, the BBL winners list reveals one dynasty and a chasing pack. Perth Scorchers stand alone with six titles from nine finals, a record built on a settled pace-bowling identity and big-game players rather than one hot summer.
Sydney Sixers are the most consistent challenger, with three crowns and five runner-up finishes. Seven of eight franchises have now won, which keeps the league genuinely open, yet Melbourne Stars remain trophyless after three lost finals.
